REAL WOMEN HAVE BODIES
STUDENT WORK | ILLUSTRATION/PUBLICATION
For this publication project I chose to illustrate a short story from Carmen Maria Machado’s book Her Body and Other Parties. “Real Women Have Bodies” is apart of a collection of gory, queer horror stories that speaks through a feminist lens. When designing the layout it was important to find a style that was cohesive with its themes as well as it's author.
INSPIRATION | REMEDIOS VARO
When choosing an illustration style it was important to match the message of the story. I drew inspiration from the author and the descriptive imagery found in the story. This led me to the work of Hispanic surrealist Remedios Varo. Her work also included lots of fabric which is an important theme in the story.
